What got me here won't get me there?!

"What got you here won't get you there."

I’ve heard this phrase by Marshall Goldsmith many times as I built my branding agency, usually as it pertains to the people I had hired or the strategy I had put in place.

Entrepreneurs tend to outgrow their original team members and business strategy because their business changes over time and needs new blood and perspective to help it go to the next level.

As much as I heard it, I never paid much attention to this phrase until I began to work with CEOs and high-net-worth individuals who were building massive enterprises.

I saw that they all used one very important set of skills to get them to where they were, yet they would need a highly attuned new set of skills to get them where they wanted to go.

It was actually their way of thinking and understanding of how the world works that was standing in the way of their next step.

You may have always been smart—genius even—yet this next step in your life, business, or career feels out of reach for you.

You’ve always known what to do because you could think your way out of every situation.

You knew the answers before the questions presented themselves.

You were ahead of the game, the industry, the clients.

You knew how to climb the success ladder in your work.

You could make more money, have more flexibility, and live the life you desire.

Until one day it began to sour.

Until you lost the next step.

Until you hit the wall.

You forgot how to get yourself back on track.

Everything that worked stopped working.

So, you tried something different.

You researched every tactic and strategy.

You dove into your competitors' websites and programs.

You even tried to get ideas from the smartest people you knew.

You found yourself desperately trying anything you found.

Yet nothing worked.

So, you felt trapped.

A failure.

Losing at a game you had always won.

Was it you?

Or did the game change?

What happened?

Well, in order to find out, we have to go back to the beginning. That's where we find the truth.

And no, I don’t mean the beginning of your business or career.

I mean the beginning of your life. (cue dramatic music)

That's exactly what we'll be exploring in my next email. In the meantime... read on and sign up!

Melanie's face

I’m A LOT. No, really. I am a lot. I know it. I’m good with it. Since I arrived, I have been an overwhelming human to most who encounter me. I’ve been told that I’m too tall. That my hair looks ugly. That I just want to be the center of attention. That I get up too early. That I push myself too hard. That I’m too picky. That I’m too loud. That I talk too much. That I look masculine. That I’m too hard to love.I’ve heard it all. And I’ve repeated other people’s words to myself for far too many years....

I was chatting with a friend recently about how this year has been a lot. A LOT. It’s been the hardest year of my adult life by a long shot, yet it’s also been healing, full of beauty, and dripping in lessons. Although it’s been hard, I’ve become more myself this year than in any past years. My sense of self has solidified and I’ve stepped into being unapologetically me. So as I was sitting with my friend reflecting on all of this, we decided that 2024 has been "Awfully Wonderful." I love a...

Candler Oak in Savannah Georgia

I spent last week in Savannah with a client who’s shifting her focus from her successful career to the kind of business that brings her deep joy and adventure. We spent time shifting old patterns of scarcity, uncovering beautiful childhood memories, and painting a sunset in watercolor. The whole trip was truly remarkable. And then I came home to this: Huffiness over the Pantone color of the year being Mocha Mousse A health insurance CEO was assassinated in NYC The Canadian postal service is...
